‘Tis the season for giving thanks: for our health, families, jobs, and multitudes of things that give our lives joy and meaning. For victims of domestic violence, however, the holiday season can be an especially trying and difficult time of year. That is why at Riggs Distributing, Inc. we are supporting La Casa de las Madres support shelter with a special holiday event on December 15th, 2015 from 6:30-9:00pm.

From their website: “In 1976 La Casa de las Madres became California’s first and the nation’s second shelter dedicated to women and children escaping domestic violence. Today, that once-quiet shelter sustains a 24-hour lifeline for San Francisco Bay Area survivors, and La Casa offers a continuum of solutions evolved to meet the diverse and context-specific needs of women, their children, teens, and older adults surviving domestic violence.”

With their goal of responding to calls from help from domestic violence, La Casa works continuously to provide and expand their services to those in need.

Since their shelter (California’s first and the nation’s second) opened in 1976, La Casa has grown to offer a, “continuum of solutions evolved to meet the diverse and context-specific needs of women, their children, teens, and older adults surviving domestic violence.” Through a multitude of programs they meet the needs of those suffering from domestic violence through:

  • Crisis Response: 4,443 callers accessed statewide, toll-free Adult and Teen Crisis Lines and La Casa reached out to 2,045 survivors following police response to their abuse.
  • Intervention: 2,974 survivors of all ages emerged safer and stronger through a variety of emergency residential and community-based safety planning and support services.
  • Prevention: 8,214 teens, adults, and professionals learned about domestic violence dynamics, warning signs, and how to upend cycles of violence.

We are proud to support La Casa this holiday season with an event that helps keep their important organization alive. You can support La Casa as well by registering for our event here and at La Casa’s website here.
